SICA Downtown Digital Press Release - May 23, 2006
SICA is pleased to presents DOWNTOWN DIGITAL - an exciting new series of monthly events. The series will expose the audience to a growing variety of today's electronic artists and genres within the Modern Electronic Music category every 2nd Friday of the month beginning at 8pm. Kicking off DOWNTOWN DIGITAL's fascinating exploration in modern electronic music will be MIKE BLACK and BUH. Admission is only $5.
Mike Black’s self released CD “GO/NO-GO” has already been picked up by Troma Films, played on XM satellite radio, as well as numerous terrestrial and radio stations. He has played the NJ shore for years with bands and as a solo act. Most recently Mike opened for the Tony Levin Band at The Saint. Mike's past experience includes a long stint in Guitar Craft; the series of music seminars began by Robert Fripp in 1985. He plays keyboards, synthesizers, vocoder and the “Warr Guitar”--- an 8 stringed tapping instrument.
BUH (A.K.A. Richard Wilkins) began playing music at about the age of 10 when he found a trumpet in the attic. Over the years, he played classical guitar and electric guitar. A couple years ago, he broke his wrist in a skateboarding accident and wasn’t able to play the guitar. His need to create music was satisfied when he discovered computer software that allowed him to compose using a keyboard. Richard's electronic music "chops" have been monitored and mentored by friends found on a European Internet forum called TranceCreator. He plans to release his first full length CD of modern electronic music in July.
DOWNTOWN DIGITAL - a new series of monthly events!
No longer is electronic music bound by the mere blips and bleeps most commonly associated with this genre. Today entire orchestras are housed on a single computer. Drum kits can be selected by browsing down a list of files on the computer’s hard drive. Chose your bass player by selecting from a list of samples recorded by your favorite bass players. Don’t have room for a Hammond B3 organ in your living room? No problem, just load up the soft-synth emulation of the B3 on your computer.
Digital music is in the mainstream these days. Every television commercial you hear today uses some sort of digital music software. The music was either created on a computer, arranged on a computer, or made ready for publication and broadcasting on a computer. Many contemporary recording artists now rely on digital music creation software to help them produce today's hit songs.
SICA is a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to establish a uniquely stimulating and creative environment in which to experience the contemporary arts. The primary goal of the center is to increase the general public’s accessibility, awareness and appreciation of the contemporary arts in central New Jersey. By establishing close relationships with major art organizations and educational institutions, we will seek to complement and augment those programs currently available through the establishment of classes, lectures, exhibitions and performances.
